Almond Eye Surgery ( Canthopexy)

On the upper face, the position and golden ratio of the eyelids and eyebrows have always been the most important determinants of facial expression.  Lately, canthopexy/almond eye surgery has become very popular in order to achieve a more dynamic and attractive look, and it is an operation that can be used for both cosmetic and functional purposes. 

The position of the inner and outer corners (canthus) formed by the upper and lower eyelids on the sides is very important both cosmetically and functionally. The outer corner of our eyelids, which we call the lateral canthus, is positioned higher. The situation where the lateral canthal angle is lower is called negative canthal tilt. Canthopexy/Almond eye surgery; It is a surgery that can be used either alone or in combination for cosmetic purposes or in cases caused by negative canthal tilt, scleral show, eyelid deformities after trauma or lower eyelid blepharoplasty, lower eyelid laxity and has successful results.

The lower angle of the outer corners of the eyelid (negative canthal tilt) causes an unhappy and tired look around the eyes. The aim of almond eye surgery is to create almond-shaped eyelids by raising the eyelid margin according to the anatomy of the person's face and periocular contour.

How Is Almond Eye Surgery Performed?

Almond eye surgery can be performed in combination with upper or lower eyelid blepharoplasty, as well as temporal lift and brow lift in necessary cases. In combination with temporal lift or brow lift, cat eye appearance can also be obtained with endoscopic dynamic canthopexy. The anaesthesia technique can be preferred as local anaesthesia, sedation or general anaesthesia according to the combinations planned in the patient. When performed together with upper eyelid blepharoplasty, it can be performed through the same incision without the need for a different  incision. When performed together with temporal lift or brow lift, it can also be performed endoscopically through a small incision area opened through the scalp. 

What Is The Recovery Process After Almond Eye Surgery?

If the almond eye surgery is performed together with upper or lower eyelid surgery, the patient can be discharged on the same day, and when it is performed together with temporal lift or brow lift, the patient can be discharged the next day after 1 night hospitalisation. After 1 week, stitches are removed and patients can continue their social life. Edema/swelling  and bruising process varies from person to person. To minimise the risk of scarring, the incision on the upper eyelid is made in the eyelid crease and the incision on the scalp is made using special techniques.
